I have consulted the Chief Justice

on the subject of your

f

Lordship's

despatch, and we agree in the opinion,

<

(

that Mr. Wise would perform the

" duties of Registrar well, and

" that his appointment would give

general satisfaction."

I. Bruce Shepherd is, no doubt, a valuable afficer. I am not aware

of

Ольд

Or as

local candidate, who is fitter

fit for the appointment as

Int Wise, unless it be Mr

unless it be Mr May,

the

Asstur. Colonial Secretary who has had 11 years service, and is an excellent

Chinese Scholar.

I consider that a

salary of $6,000

or even 45,000 per annum would be

Tufficient,

Sufficient, and I think it should be made a condition of the appoint-

ment of a new

Registrar that he

should, without

addition to the

any

establishment, furnish the Director

of

Public Works with written infor _mation regarding mortgages, sales,

prices, etc, which an

officer of

the Public Works Department has

now to extract for himself.

If the appointment is bestowed upon Mr Wise, I have to request Your Lordship not to fill up the appointment of second magistrate at posent, as

are of opinion that it may be abolished.

я

I have the honour to be,

My Lord, Your Lordship's most obidemit,

humble servant,

William Robinzon
